With nearly 3,700 students, 400 staff members, and a long-standing reputation as one of Queensland’s premier public schools, standing still is simply not an option at Kelvin Grove State College.

As a P–12 institution, Kelvin Grove is renowned for its signature excellence programs spanning sports, academia, and the arts - including formal partnerships with the Queensland Ballet Academy and the Australian Computer Society. To maintain this high benchmark, the college actively invests in innovative technologies that foster vital 21st-century capabilities: critical thinking, complex problem-solving, and collaborative inquiry.

Overcoming Tech Roadblocks to Drive Innovation

Before partnering with Mindflight7, Kelvin Grove had experimented with virtual reality platforms. However, Executive Principal John Thornberry noted that managing uncurrated content created significant friction for teachers, coupled with valid student safety and security concerns.

To overcome these roadblocks, the college transitioned to Mindflight7’s Portable XR Lab. As featured in the Education Matters Magazine August 2026 Issue, the portable platform operates seamlessly without requiring active internet or external power connections, providing an immediate, hassle-free setup for teachers. Supported by Mindflight7’s AI-powered SmartHub platform, educators can instantly generate curriculum-aligned lesson plans linked directly to an expansive library of over 200 applications.

Showcase of Achievements: XR Lab in Action

Initially introduced within the senior IT faculties, the XR Lab has rapidly expanded across multiple disciplines and is now filtering down into middle school classrooms (Years 7–9):

  • 🏛️ Immersive History: Shifting beyond passive text-based learning, students take guided virtual tours of the Roman Colosseum. Teachers leverage multi-sensory immersion to prompt deeper empathy and critical thinking, asking students to reflect on what a Roman citizen felt walking through the arena.

  • 🔬 Risk-Free Science Labs: VR enables students to conduct complex chemical and physical experiments in a virtual environment. This saves setup time, eliminates chemical handling hazards, and alleviates strain on physical lab facilities.

  • 🎨 Street Art & Digital Expression: The college's visual arts street art crew utilizes dedicated VR tilt and paint tools to design and execute graffiti art digitally.

  • 🌱 Student-Led Leadership: Senior Year 12 students took ownership of the technology by capturing and designing a 360-degree interactive virtual tour of the school's new Indigenous garden walkway.

Tangible Learning Outcomes

The impact of immersive learning at Kelvin Grove is backed by research from Swinburne University, which demonstrated that children using Immersive VR achieved a 77.5% success rate in logic and problem-solving tasks - significantly outperforming those using tablets (32.5%) or physical board games (30%).

"VR increases the number of senses engaged in the classroom... students are more immersed in the environment rather than just reading about it or watching slides."Mr. John Thornberry, Executive Principal, Kelvin Grove State College

With three portable XR Lab cases containing 18 Meta Quest headsets currently in active rotation, Kelvin Grove continues to demonstrate how forward-thinking leadership combined with tailored, secure technology empowers students to reach their full potential.
