Beyond the ATAR: 4 Ways Schools Can Thrive in the AI Era



We often talk about the “future of work” like it’s something waiting for us in 2030. But as Episode 1 of The Skills Bridge shows, that future is already reshaping classrooms today.


In the premiere episode, host Pat Panetta sits down with Elizabeth “Liz” Goldberg, Educational Innovation Leader at Flinders Christian College. After 36 years of teaching across government and independent schools, Liz has seen more than a few education shake‑ups. Her take on the current AI boom? The tech is moving fast, but schools move slowly - and that gap is where students get left behind.


If schools want to prepare students for a world that demands adaptability, digital fluency and healthy skepticism, they need practical, ground‑level strategies. Here are four of Liz’s most useful insights.


1. Stop Banning AI — Teach Smart Use


When generative AI first landed, many schools reacted by banning it. Liz says that approach isn’t sustainable. AI isn’t going anywhere, and students need to learn how to use it without outsourcing their thinking.


What this looks like in practice:

Teach students to question AI outputs, check sources, spot deepfakes and understand where AI gets things wrong. AI should augment human intelligence, not replace it. When students learn to use AI critically, their analytical skills get stronger - not weaker.



2. Cut the Digital Noise


Students are great at consuming digital entertainment, but not so great at using tech with purpose. Constant notifications and dopamine hits create distracted, anxious learners.


What this looks like in practice:

Remove passive tech during learning time. Liz introduced phone pouches (like Yondr) at her school, and the shift was immediate - calmer classrooms, better focus, and students who finally engage deeply with learning. Once the noise is gone, students can move from passive scrolling to active digital creation.



3. Upgrade Old Spaces into Innovation Hubs


You can’t teach future skills in a room designed for the 19th century. If we want students to collaborate, problem‑solve and experiment, the physical environment needs to support that.


What this looks like in practice:

Transform underused spaces - like quiet library corners - into flexible, tech‑enabled Innovation Hubs. Liz helped redesign dusty libraries into vibrant zones with VR pods, maker spaces and collaborative areas where students can code, design and explore immersive tech with purpose.



4. Support Teachers with Real Capacity Help


Teachers are stretched thin. Dropping a box of VR headsets or a new AI tool on their desk and expecting seamless integration is unrealistic - and a fast track to burnout.


What this looks like in practice:

Schools need an Innovation Leader or external partner who can map immersive experiences directly to the curriculum. Liz’s team pre‑curates VR lessons (like a 5‑minute dive into the human heart) so teachers simply book the space. The tech becomes a helpful teaching assistant, not another admin burden.

Parents want security, opportunity and happiness for their kids. To deliver that, schools need to look beyond a single ATAR score and focus on adaptability, critical thinking, digital literacy and human empathy. These are the skills that will carry students into 2030 and far beyond.
