M7 on 3AW: Why the Classroom Device Ban is a Win for Focused Learning

As Victoria prepares to expand the school device ban to include smartwatches and headphones by 2027, a national debate has ignited: Is technology in the classroom going backwards?
Last week, our CEO Kajal Pala joined Pat Panetta on 3AW / Channel 9 to provide a different perspective. Far from being a retreat from the future, this ban is a long-overdue "clearing of the decks" that allows schools to refocus on high-impact, intentional learning.

Distraction Tech vs. Learning Tech
During the interview, Kajal highlighted the vital distinction between "Distraction Tech" (unsupervised personal wearables) and "Learning Tech" (curriculum-aligned immersive tools).
“Teachers shouldn't have to act as 'Digital Police' for smartwatches that fragment a student’s attention,” Kajal explained. “By removing these distractions, we create the mental space for tools that actually restore concentration. It’s about moving from always-on distraction to intentional, controlled technology.”
The "Frog Dissection" and the "Career Passport"
One of the most powerful moments of the discussion was the exploration of what is now possible in a "distraction-free" classroom. Pat Panetta was fascinated by the idea of students performing complex tasks—like open-heart surgery or frog dissections—without the risks or costs of the physical world.
“We’re moving from 'plugging in' to 'teleporting,'” Kajal noted. “VR acts as a 'Career Passport.' A student can be an aerospace engineer at 9:00 AM and a renewable energy technician at 10:00 AM. It turns abstract career talk into a real, lived experience, helping them find their 'why' before they even leave school.”
The Proof: 96% Engagement Rate
Kajal shared exclusive data from a recent Mindflight7 study involving 1,300 students across 16 schools. The findings were staggering: 96% of students remained in a state of "full immersion"—fully engaged and focused—throughout the entire 45-minute lesson.
In an era of 8-second attention spans, this level of engagement isn't just a technological win; it’s a pedagogical breakthrough.
What This Means for Schools
At Mindflight7, we don’t just provide tools; we act as a Capacity Partner. This media appearance underscores our commitment to lifting the "Invisible Labour" off educators. By clearing the "noise" of personal devices, schools can finally move away from managing technology and toward experiencing real student outcomes.
